Peebles Girl Guides celebrate Centenary at Venlaw
On Saturday 24th July, 2010, Peebles Girl Guides had a visit to Venlaw Community Woodland. They were invited by the Woodland Management Committee to take part in a day of woodland activities to celebrate the centenary of the registration of the first Guide Company in Peebles on 26th July 1910. This was the first ever Scottish Guide Company to be registered at H.Q. in London. The 1st Peebles Guide Company was started in February 1910 by Lady Erskine of Venlaw, and the girls marched up the South Drive, now part of the Community Woodland, to their meetings at Venlaw House.
During a fun packed day, the Guides tried their hand at all sorts of woodland activities. They had a tree recognition challenge, and bark-rubbing organised by the Committee; Greenwood Working demonstration by Bob Fleet; Willow Weaving with Toni Coyle; and Traditional Fire Lighting with Rab Erskine and helpers. The Guides thanked everyone who had contributed to their special day, including Lisa Brydon, Community Woodland Officer with Borders Forest Trust. The day ended with the Guides singing "Taps", just as their sisters in Guiding ended their meetings in the same place 100 years ago.
Funding for the event was kindly provided through Forestry Commission Scotland's "Forestry 4 People" grant, which was greatly appreciated.
