Fun and Folklore in Venlaw Woodland
Venlaw Community Woodland hosted a Fun ‘n’ Folklore Nature Walk at Venlaw on Saturday afternoon, 17th July, 2010.
Supported by a ‘Forestry4People grant’ arranged through Borders Forest Trust, this was a guided walk, led by Erica Niven around Venlaw Community Woodland, exploring flora and fauna, plus investigating woodland folklore, including medicinal plants and their uses. There were not too many wild flowers to find and talk about, but plenty other things to look at and talk about, including some animal signs, and some dried out sap that looked just like paint. The children, parents and Erica talked about various flowers, why they had their particular names, and covered a bit of folklore in the woodland. In the clearing at the Beech trees, the children had some fun making ‘journey’ sticks, - in fact some of the adults also had a shot at making some.
Venlaw Community Woodland Management Committee is happy to acknowledge the support of Forestry Commission Scotland through the ‘Forestry4People’ grant, and the assistance given by Borders Forest Trust.
