Aims of F.L.C.W.
Friends of Leadburn Community Woodland was formed in 2005 and is a Scottish charity (SC037052). We purchased Leadburn Wood from the Forestry Commission in February 2007. The woodland was formally opened on 1 April 2007 by Jeremy Purvis MSP.
Leadburn Wood is an area of former conifer plantation, previously owned by the Forestry Commission. Most of it was clear felled in 2001/2 and, due to its unsuitability for commercial forestry, the Commission chose to sell the site after the timber had been extracted. We are trying to create a pleasant and varied location there for community use. We have planted native tree species, started to restore a raised bog, created large ponds and retained some open areas. Some of the work that has been carried out since purchasing the site is described on our other pages.
Location
Leadburn Wood extends over 44 hectares (109 acres) and is located approximately 12 miles south of Edinburgh city centre and some 4 miles south of Penicuik at Leadburn. The site lies at the southern limit of the Esk valley, between the Pentland Hills to the north west and the Moorfoot Hills to the south east. The woodland is a central point between the rural communities of Eddleston, Howgate and Lamancha.
The woodland is accessed from a layby that is situated one km south of Leadburn off the A703 (OS NT236544). Two disused railway lines cross the site and provide the main access paths. There are additional grass paths that have been created.
Visitors on foot are welcome. Dogs are also welcome, but owners are asked to move any droppings off the paths - waste may be deposited in vegetation as long as this is at least a yard from the path. Plastic spades have been provided to make this job easier.
Bicycles are allowed but should only use the two railway line paths. Unauthorised motorised vehicles are not allowed, except for those needed to allow disabled access.
