Community transport is available to all residents in the Borders through a variety of projects. There are two main types of passengers who can be catered for:
Those with disabilities or mobility problems, wheelchair passengers, housebound
Not for profit Community Groups
The Wheels services use specially adapted vehicles
The British Red Cross also has a specially adapted minibus driven by volunteers, but can provide volunteer drivers using their own cars
Royal Voluntary Service provides transport with volunteer drivers using their own cars
To visit family and friends
To go for a day's outing: shopping, theatre visit, local gardens, lunch, historic monuments, parks
To take part in meetings of local organisations
To visit the dentist, optician, hairdresser
To visit people in hospital, or to attend NHS hospital appointments
In fact, to do anything that involves transport
Please contact your local project for the cost of using the vehicles. Most of the journeys within the Borders for people with disabilities/mobility problems and for those who cannot use public transport are subsidised by Scottish Borders Council Social Car Scheme (except NHS hospital appointments).
