One in 100 people are affected by an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). With a population of 108,000, this means that there will be approximately 1,000 people in the Scottish Borders with an ASD.
ASD affects people from all walks of life. They are complex, lifelong developmental disorders that affect the way a person communicates and relates to people around them. Children and adults with ASD have difficulty relating to others in a meaningful way. Their ability to develop friendships is generally limited as is their capacity to understand other people's emotional expression.
