One in 100 people has an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It can affect anyone from any background and the effects will differ from individual to individual.
These pages are for anyone who would like to know more about ASD. They will give you a basic awareness of the main points for the diagnosis of ASD and signpost you to some useful information and contacts.
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are a group of lifelong developmental disorders that affect the way a person communicates and relates to the people around them.
Children and adults with ASD have difficulties with every day interactions. Their ability to develop friendships is generally limited as is their capacity to understand other people’s emotional expression. While people with ASD have similar impairments, each individual is unique. Each person has a different personality, life experiences and a unique genetic inheritance.
People with ASD are also often very rigid in their thinking, they may have obsessive compulsive behaviours, special interests and show a marked resistance to change. They also experience difficulties with social interaction, social communication and imagination. These are known as the Triad of Impairments (Wing 1981).
