ONE THOUSAND YEARS OF PEEBLES HIGH STREEET
Peebles Civic Society is proud to be working with Scottish Borders Council Museum Service towards an exhibition on the history of Peebles High Street over 1000 years.
The exhibition will follow a time line to illustrate the development of the High Street in a variety of ways. Using maps, visual material such as photographs, illustrations and video interviews, the exhibition will develop the history, the life and the people of Peebles in shops, commerce, trades, houses and everyday living.
The exhibition will open on Saturday 14 September, 2013 in Peebles Museum within the Chambers Institution. An illustrated leaflet will be available during the run of the exhibition.

The “Bridges of Peebles” is a 2012 revision of the original booklet first published in 1994 and gives detail of walking trails which can be followed by local people and visitors to the Royal Burgh starting in the town centre.
The first trail, called the Burgh Trail, is a short walk visiting six bridges in the town and the booklet offers information about the origins and history of each bridge.
The second trail, called the Riverside Trail, is longer and takes the visitor beyond the town to visit four river crossings towards Manor and Lyne.
The booklet also contains maps showing the bridge locations.
The information in the booklet is greatly enhanced by sketches of the bridges which are the work of local artist Philip Hutton whose painting also appears on the front cover.
Copies of the original booklet sold out some time ago but with continuing interest in the booklet Peebles Civic Society decided to arrange for a reprinting to take place. The costs of this work have mainly been borne by Peebles Civic Society with a little help from Peebles Common Good Fund.
Interest in the new booklet has come from as far afield as Poole in Dorset and as the new tourist season gets underway Peebles Civic Society is hopeful that the “Bridges of Peebles – A Heritage Trail” will be a useful guide to locals and tourists alike.
The booklet will be available from Peebles Tourist Information Centre at £1 per copy.
