Goings on in Eddleston

Enquiries from Abroad

Hello to friends far and wide

We're quite often contacted by ex patriate Eddlestonians (?) who come across our web site when browsing from their new homes abroad - or even elsewhere in the UK.    We've had emails from south of the border, from Paris, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.   Some are looking for family roots, others remember the village from their youth and are interested to see what is happenning today.

Stephen Maley

....is looking for the Thorburn family who hail from Eddleston.  If you can help, please contact him on 0131-661 5053 or stephen.maley@moredun.ac.uk

Looking for Ramages

Malcolm Carmichael Ramage is coming to Scotland in August and would like to find, if possible any records of his ancestral family - Ramages.  All he has is Alexander Ramage born at Eddleston 16/5/1828; emigrated to Australia in 1851. His father  may have been James born about 1800.If you can help, please contact Malcolm on malcolmramage@hotmail.com

Alexander Mark/Eddleston Curling Club

Marie Rowan would like to see the original minutes of Eddleston Curling Club.  Her 3 x greatgrandfather Alexander Mark was closely involved with the forming of Eddleston Curling Club and she has found seeing his name prominent in the original minutes very exciting. Is there any chance of buying a copy of these minutes which would reveal his handwriting as he was secretary in the 1850/60s.  Contact marierowan3@hotmail.co.uk

Huts and Hermits

Douglas Dalgleish recalls from the early 1970's when he lived in the village, that there were huts and caravans along two sides of a small field by the Longcote Burn, now the site of houses at Burnside. He is looking for information and photographs of those huts and caravans. Can anyone in Eddleston assist in any way? Also at that time, a hermit was living in a hut in the conifer wood on Old Manse Road. Does anyone know who he was, or how he and his hut came to be there? Any photos or information would be appreciated.  Contact Douglas at rddalgleish@gmail.com or 0131-452 8145

Eddletons

Joan Carol Eddleston lives in Virginia in the United States. She and her father, Eugene Nelson Eddleton,  are wondering if they have relatives in Eddleston.  They are guessing that the 's' in their name was dropped somehow when their relatives came to America and would love to hear from a distant cousin.   If you can help. please contact Joan at  joan154874@gmail.com

Looking for Darnhall Kennels

Richard Hitchcock is trying to find Darnhall Kennels as it is registered on his grandmother's birth certificate.  He thinks it might be in the Barony Grounds.  He can find Darnhall and Darnhall mains on old maps but not the Kennels.  His grandmother's name was Elizabeth Fraser Tait born May 1880.  If you can help. please contact him on rgh851@talktalk.net  or 01772 774850

They had a son Robert born in 1803, and he was Brian's g-g-g-g grandad.
