TWEEDDALE COMMUNITY TRANSPORT
The Tweeddale Community Transport project is funded by TAVO and the Scottish Executive and is for the beneift of all residents of Tweeddale
TWEED WHEELS is a vehicle for people with disabilities and mobility problems. Most of the journeys in this vehicle are subsidised by Scottish Borders Council making it a very affordable service.
The COMMUNITY MINIBUS can be hired by any not for profit community group and allows the group’s membership to travel together to events or outings. All the drivers are volunteers: the project can supply a driver with the vehicle although some users prefer to have their own. Indeed, we have our own driver based here in Eddleston. Appropriate training is given to all drivers.

COMPOSTINGNew composting bins - Help or Hindrance? One local resident has happily incorporated hers into an ongoing composting system (increasing capacity by 25% in the process) and hopes that many others will do the same. However not everyone is able to do so and even those who can, often have more garden waste than they can reasonably deal with. Unlike in towns, we haven’t been given the option of a wheelie bin for compostable material to be taken away by the council. Following requests to the Community Council and supported by Cllr Neil Calvert, we have asked for the uplift to be reinstated.
Not surprisingly there are budget and cost issues to consider. A review was promised by SBC after last summer - 2006 - and we are still waiting! This is being followed up by our local councillors but any extension to the scheme is dependent on financial support from the Scottish Executive. A report will be put before SBC in the near future but realistically, it will be 2008 before we can expect any changes. In the meantime, eco unfriendly car journeys to Eshiels seem to be the only alternative.

Borders Care and Repair
This initiative was launched by Scottish Borders Council in February 2005 in the Eildon area as a pilot project and has been such a success that it is now being rolled out to the rest of the Borders. The service is based in Ettrick Riverside in Selkirk and is aimed at homeowners and private tenants over 60 years old or, if disabled, of any age. Little jobs like changing a light bulb or hanging curtains need no longer be a worry and even much larger jobs can be tackled and help given with applying for grants. If enough people are interested (even a few to meet over coffee) SBC would be happy to come to the village to explain this all in more detail. For more information, please call Tom Small, Co-ordinator on 01750 724895, send him an email to Care and Repair or have a look at their web site by clicking the link below http://www.borderscareandrepair.org.uk/

Last year the Community Council had a very interesting presentation from Ian Hogarth - SBC Emergency Planning Officer - and David Campbell. Following this, a Flooding Protection Group has been set up, co-ordinated by Ted Radford (01721 730665) The main risk area is Station Road but if anyone else feels that they too are at risk and want to join, they should contact Ted. A number of able bodied villagers have offered to help during flood alerts and contact details have been circulated. Please also note the new (and more accessibe) location for the sandbag store - in the old orchard at the north end of Station Road. Have a look in our library for more information which you can download
Abandoned VehiclesScottish Borders Council have been allocated a sum of money from the Scottish Executive to help it deal with abandoned vehicles and clear up some of the unsightly farm steadings and rural cottages etc which may have abandoned machinery close by. The offending vehicles or machinery will be removed free of charge for a limited period of time – so take advantage of this while it lasts!
