EDDLESTON CARPET BOWLING CLUB

The club is believed to have started up in the early 1900s in a building up the Mill Burn before moving into the village hall but we do not really know this for sure. If you have any information about the club please take the time to let us know.

Numbers have fluctuated over the years. From a peak of over 40 in 1970, there are currently 20 members - 6 from Eddleston 13 from Peebles area and 1 from Moorfoot with average attendance of around 17. The club is always on the lookout for new members, particularly from within the village so if you want to meet new friends, learn a new sport and while away the long winter evenings, contact the Secretary now.

Club nights are on a Thursday at 7:30pm in Eddleston Village Hall and run from the beginning of October until the end of March with other open and invitation competitions also being held on various dates throughout the season.

There are competitions for each half of the season with all members joining in. There is also a cup for the under 18s which we are delighted to see revived in recent years.

Adult membership is only £8 for the whole season with around 25 sessions. Senior citizens pay £7 and under 18s £5. With no special sportswear or equipment required to take part, this is a very inexpensive sport in which to participate and we would very much like to encourage new members.

For more information, please contact any committee member or the club secretary B Nicholson, 16 Bellfield Road, Eddleston, Peebles. EH45 8QR. Phone 01721 730371 or by e-mail to eddlestoncbc@aol.com

CHARITY MIXED PAIRS

The Eddleston Carpet Bowling Club held its Annual Charity Mixed Pairs on Saturday 15th March.  With only 12 pairs entered the competition was run on a round-robin basis. The winners were David Tait and Tracy Walker who beat Eddie Ritchie and his daughter Lorraine in an enjoyable final.

Thanks to all the players from Fountainhall, Broughton, Walkerburn, Innerleithen, Penicuik, Blyth Bridge and to our members from Peebles and Moorfoot for turning this into an successful evening raising £160 for Alzheimer Scotland local branch

AWARD WINNING BOWLS

Above is one of the cups and two of the new bowls bought with a lottery grant awarded to the Club two years ago.

March 2004 was a major milestone in the life of the Club. Thanks to Sportscotland and with considerable help from Scottish Borders Council and TAVO, the Club successfully applied for a grant of £3,267 which allowed them to replace all four bowling boards, carpets, bowls and storage trolleys which only need one person to operate. Lifting the boards is still a 4 person job but it is a much improved system.

As a requirement of the grant was a more formal set up, a new constitution was adopted with various rules put into place and after many discussions with members, this was finally adopted at a special meeting of members in January 2004.

To celebrate the award there was an open day in the village hall with a Mixed Pairs Tournament being held in the evening. Local MSP Jeremy Purvis attended during the evening to present the official award certificate to chairperson David Tait. A sum of £180 was raised by this tournament which was donated to the Village Hall restoration fund
