I can think back 25 years ago when wages weren't big. Once you paid your rent gas and electricity, you weren't left with much for food.
I have had to live off £24 a week to feed four of us, so I had to think what was cheap and what was going to last.
The first thing I got was...
1 big bag of tatties
2 bags of flour
1 big tub of margarine
£1 worth of broken fish.
eggs, beans and a tin of cheap meat.
I used to think what mother gave me and my brothers and sisters. There were 10 of us to feed then.
If mother had any cold tatties left from dinnertime we would get them for our tea.
She put them in a pie dish then grated cheese into the cold tatties, added some milk, mixed them together and spread it over the beans.
Then she put a drop more cheese on the top, baked it in the oven till it was warm through. We ate it with toast and bread.
