Tuesday 12th June, 2012
The first Scottish Carers Parliament will take place on Monday 1 October 2012. There are 185 places available for carers to attend.
The theme for the first parliament, chosen by the majority of the 1000 carers who replied to the recent consultation, is Services and Support. We are expecting the event to be oversubscribed. There are 660,000 unpaid carers in Scotland and over 400 of those who replied to the consultation indicated an interest in attending. The carers on the Steering Group which is planning the event have therefore decided that there will be a ballot to select delegates.
The ballot will be done based on parliamentary constituency to ensure that carers from across Scotland are represented. The draw will be held in late July and Carers Scotland will inform everyone of the outcome in early August. There will be two delegates selected from each of the 73 Scottish parliamentary constituencies.
Please find attached an application form for you to fill in yourself if you are a carer, or to distribute to carers known to your organisation. Alternatively, you can apply online at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CarersParliament2012. and help to save administration and postage costs
Carers Scotland have enabled the survey to allow you to submit multiple applications from one PC, should you wish to complete this application for a number of carers. It would also be helpful if you could advertise this to carers in any email bulletins and facebook pages you have or on your twitter feed (#carersparliament2012)
The closing date for applications is 14 July 2012. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact Rena Friel at Carers Scotland on 0141 445 3070 email: rena.friel@carerscotland.org.
Next Coalition Meeting – 29th August
The next meeting of the Coalition of Carers in Scotland will be held on the 29th of August in Stirling. In the morning session we will be focusing on the upcoming Carers Parliament. This is an opportunity to find out more about what is planned, to help to shape the event and for those carers who won’t be attending to contribute their views in advance of the day.
In the afternoon we will be focusing on the Life Changes Fund which is being managed by the Long Term Conditions Alliance Scotland on behalf of the Big Lottery. This is a £50 million fund to support looked after children and people with dementia and their carers. This is a great opportunity to find out more about the development of the fund and to discuss opportunities for supporting the development of services for carers looking after someone with dementia.
